The MUTEK AI Ecologies Lab is an interdisciplinary artist residency at the intersection of artificial intelligence, art, and ecology. Bringing together artists, researchers, and technologists, the residency fosters collaboration and critical discourse on AI-driven artistic practices. In collaboration with leading institutions—including the Society for Arts and Technology (SAT), the Milieux Institute for Art, Culture, and Technology, the Abundant Intelligences Program, and the Applied AI Institute—participants co-develop tools and methodologies that investigate a more sustainable future for digital arts. By rethinking AI’s role in creative expression and environmental awareness, the MUTEK AI Ecologies Lab actively explores how technological advancements can align with ecological responsibility and sustainable artistic practices.
In an era where technology increasingly mediates our relationship with nature, this initiative underscores the importance of ethical and sustainable AI practices, reinforcing MUTEK’s commitment to supporting experimental, research-driven projects that shape the future of digital art and sound.
Lab Timeline
The Lab unfolds in multiple stages, providing a dynamic space for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and creation. It begins with an online component in April 2025, where participants engage in online masterclasses, design thinking workshops, and one-on-one mentorship sessions. This is followed by the in-person Lab from June 2-6, 2025 at Concordia University and the SAT, bringing participants to Tiohtià:ke / Montréal for hands-on workshops and a hackathon-style sprint to develop prototypes of AI-driven tools. The SAT will leverage the expertise of its Living Lab to lead design and development workshops for the selected projects. In addition, SAT’s research-developers, developers, and integrators will support the development of prototypes during the hackathon taking place at the SAT on June 4, 5, and 6.
The program culminates at the MUTEK Forum from August 20-22, 2025, where participants showcase their work and receive feedback from a diverse network of industry professionals.
A diverse group of mentors and experts from the SAT, Climate Reality Project, Creative Green Tools Canada, Accenture Song, MILA, and Abundant Intelligences, will guide participants throughout the lab, offering insights, feedback, and support to help prepare for the hands-on work ahead.
