These representations can reinforce sexist and queerphobic attitudes and internalized misogyny among gamers. In a post-#MeToo and #GamerGate context, marked by a backlash against equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives, it is crucial to examine the creative process of professionals in the video game industry.
Through 26 interviews with professionals from four Montréal studios, this study examines the perceptions, tensions, and levers that influence the creation of diverse characters. We explore the factors that promote either the reproduction or the questioning of sexual and gender stereotypes in productions.
During this conference, Léa Séguin (principal investigator) and Justine Lahaie-Gagnon (research assistant) will present the results of this survey and propose courses of action to build a more equitable and inclusive video game industry.
