Elisa Schaeffer is a Finnish computer scientist and a childless cat person. In a mix of early-adoption of technology and climate-anxious Luddism, they explore how and why to use AI and computation in general for the greater good. Their scientific focus is on structural properties of complex systems, with practical applications in genetics, psychology, forestry or finance. Schaeffer has a strong background as an educator and team lead: well over a decade as a tenured professor in Mexico, a couple of years as Associate Professor of Applied Digital Intelligence and department head at the School of Continuing Studies of McGill University, and currently Dean of Technology at LaSalle College Montréal. When off the clock, they play video games, over-consume dystopian fiction, and attempt to grow as much as possible of their own food.
