ROUND TABLE | BOT OR NOT: Navigating AI-driven music creation

In collaboration with research and intelligence group Water & Music, BOT OR NOT is an interactive session, originally coined by Jovanka Von Wilsdorf, that puts human intelligence to the test in a world where the lines between real and artificial are becoming increasingly blurred. Audience members participate in a game with a deceptively simple premise, but the goal may prove difficult to attain; as short musical arrangements play, votes are cast as to whether each melody was created by a human, or is actually AI-generated. The results of the game will lead into a critical roundtable discussion on the use of generative AI technologies in music creation, moderated by Water & Music’s very own Yung Spielburg. Roundtable participants include experimental composer and new media performance artist Erin Gee, along with the co-founder of Never Before Heard Sounds Yotam Mann and Eliane Ellbogen, the founder of Eastern Bloc, now working as an intellectual property lawyer. The discussion will not only touch upon noteworthy AI tools’ potential and possibilities, but also delve into complex interrogations about creativity and its relationship with AI. As AI music continues to grow, is there a fundamentally human aspect of creativity that will endure?
