Despite their experimental nature, these technologies have been primarily shaped by the production needs of massive corporate industries and a new wave of tech goldrush, rather than in service of exploring their essential artistic potential.
However, these nascent artforms can actually provide artists with the opportunity to unlock the humanity in-between their keyframes, subverting an otherwise commercial process to create works that challenge definitions.
In "Between the Keyframes," virtual artists and performers Kevin Peter He & Sam Rolfes wield game engines, live motion-capture animation, and VR puppetry to break open the digital environments and expressive tools they have developed for everything from real-time performance on stage to music videos and commercial film productions – unpacking the essential principles of real-time creation, while classifying and critiquing the implications of this new creative landscape.
