Since spring 2023, the Future Festivals think tank assembled independent festival makers from Québec, Canada, Germany, and Mexico to collaboratively reimagine cultural infrastructures. Following last year’s speculative Future Festivals Summit, we invite three Canadian and Québec organizations to propose critical, hands-on interventions in generating more accessible, capable and resilient cultural practices. Rachel Weldon of Ottawa’s Debaser presents Sustain-what-you-can, a community-driven, Pay-What-You-Can ticketing experiment that reimagines festival funding through equity, accessibility, and financial sustainability. Toronto-based UKAI Projects, led by Luisa Ji, reimagines festivals as adaptive platforms where Shipwreck meets Goblin Market to prototype new rituals, exchanges, and gatherings. FEMINAE NOX’s Mira Silvers introduces The Future Sound of Equity, a blueprint for a live music ecosystem driven by BIPOC womxn—on stage, behind the scenes, and in leadership—for sustainable equity and cultural power redistribution.
