Day Pass price, excl. fees & taxesFrom domes like the Satosphère to XR installations, immersive theaters, and hybrid performance spaces, spatial audio presents both creative possibilities and technical complexity towards the adaptability. How do we craft creative intentions that are coherent with specific audio requirements? What are the technological solutions available to adapt sonic experiences from one space to another without compromising its essence?
This masterclass introduces the art of scenophony, a method developed through years of experimentation in the Satosphère and beyond. Scenophony addresses the recurring audio needs and challenges in immersive environments—such as integrating a sound artist, a DJ set, and an immersive film screening, sometimes in the same day—by proposing a comprehensive approach to spatial sound design.
A pioneer in the field of immersive creation, the Society for Arts and Technologies [SAT] inaugurated the Satosphère in October 2011: the very first permanent immersive modular theatre, dedicated to artistic creation and visualization activities. With a diameter of 18 metres and a height of 11.5 to 13 metres, this dome forms a 360-degree spherical projection screen and can accommodate up to 350 spectators. Experiences of integration within the Satosphère have contributed to the development of the scenophonic process, which aims to reduce friction between exploratory artistic intentions and existing technical paradigms, in order to deliver an optimal sonic experience for the audience.
Scenophony involves defining not only the audible field to which the audience will be exposed, but also what should not be heard. It determines the full range of artistic and technical choices related to sound creation, orchestration, and spatialization; to the sound system; the selection and placement of capture, absorption, reflection, and sound-emitting elements; the location and mobility of audience members, and more.
Ideal for sound artists, curators, and technologists, this session offers practical insights for creating seamless, resonant, and adaptable audio experiences across immersive formats.
