Mark V. Campbell, DJ, scholar, and founder of both the Northside Hip-Hop Archive and the Afrosonic Innovation Lab, and Safia Siad, curator, art historian, and DJ whose deep listening sessions have created spaces of collective attention across Montréal, Florence, Toronto, Banff, come together for a hybrid talk and performance that traces the diasporic histories and routes of sound system culture in Canada.

In this hybrid talk and performance, the Afrosonic Innovation Lab explores the diasporic histories and routes of sound system cultures in Canada, focusing on the ways in which sonic cultures migrate and flourish in the Canadian context. Starting with the migration of a King Jammy's baseline to a Toronto hip-hop track in the middle of the 1980s, their collaborative soundscape remix offers audiences an aural experience of the porousness of the Afrosonic life and the rich lineage of sound system culture in Canada. Weaving archival audio drawn from Canadian sound system histories mixed by lab founder and DJ Mark V. Campbell, this presentation highlights the lab’s research projects that are rooted in intangible cultural knowledges, indebted to Jamaican sound system cultures.
