Campbell, DJ, scholar, and founder of both the Northside Hip-Hop Archive and the Afrosonic Innovation Lab, and Safia Siad, curator, art historian, and DJ whose deep listening sessions have created spaces of collective attention across Montréal, Florence, Toronto, Banff, come together for a hybrid talk and performance that traces the diasporic histories and routes of sound system culture in Canada.
Rooted in the Lab’s broader research into Sonic Streets Technologies, a practice-based initiative examining how recorded music technologies have been shaped by the social, economic and cultural conditions of the Global South, the presentation weaves archival audio drawn from Canadian soundsystem histories to offer an aural experience of Afrosonic life and its rich lineage on Canadian soil. Starting with the migration of a Kinj Jammy’s bassline into a Toronto hip-hop track in the mid-1980s, Campbell and Siad trace how sonic cultures migrate, adapt, and flourish, building a collaborative soundscape remix that honors the intangible cultural knowledges indebted to Jamaican sound systems traditions.
