Abundant Intelligences

Ceyda Yolgörmez is a sociologist and researcher working at the intersections of social theory, technology, and critical AI studies. Yolgörmez began her doctoral research in 2016 with a focus on the "sociology of machines," bringing social theory into dialogue with developments in machine learning and examining sociological conceptions of interactivity and agency in the context of human-machine relations.

As a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Abundant Intelligences Research Program, her research has expanded to address the epistemological dimensions of multidisciplinary collaboration, the role of imaginaries in technology design, data sovereignty protocols and infrastructures, and the complexities of community-led AI development. She also continues to work at the Indigenous Futures Research Centre and co-founded the Machine Agencies Research Group in 2018 at the Milieux Institute of Art, Culture, and Technology.

Across her practice, Yolgörmez is drawn to playful and creative engagements with machines as a site for experimenting with new forms of human-machine sociality, and to methodologies that surface and challenge the assumptions we take for granted in how we understand such relations. Her research-creation collaborations have been supported by MUTEK, Eastern Bloc, Goethe-Institut Montréal, and Hexagram.
